How We Prepare for a New Litter at The Luckie Puppy
Ginger is due soon — and we could not be more ready.
Preparing for a new litter at The Luckie Puppy is not something that happens overnight. It is a process that begins weeks before the first puppy arrives and continues long after the last one goes home. Today I want to take you behind the scenes and show you exactly what goes into welcoming a new Luckie litter into the world.
Preparing Ginger
Everything starts with mama. About two weeks before her due date we bring Ginger's whelping area into our bedroom so she can get comfortable with her space before she needs it. This is her safe place — quiet, warm and close to us so we can monitor her around the clock as her due date approaches.
In the weeks leading up to whelping Ginger gets special nutrition to support her health and the health of her puppies. A mama who is well nourished produces healthier, stronger puppies — and we take that seriously.
We watch her closely for signs that labor is approaching. Temperature checks, behavioral changes, nesting instincts — we know what to look for and we are always paying attention.
Setting Up the Whelping Area
Our whelping setup is designed with one thing in mind — safety and comfort for mama and babies.
We prepare:
A clean, temperature controlled whelping area
Fresh bedding that gets changed regularly
A heat source to keep newborns warm
Supplies for monitoring weight and health daily
Everything we need to assist if necessary during delivery
We do not leave mama alone during labor. Someone is always present — day or night — until every puppy has arrived safely.
The First Hours
The first hours of a puppy's life set the foundation for everything that follows. From the moment each puppy is born we are hands on — ensuring they are breathing, nursing and bonding with mama.
We weigh every puppy at birth and continue daily weight checks to make sure everyone is gaining properly. A puppy that is not gaining weight gets immediate attention.
This is also when our Gentle Start early development program begins. From day three we introduce Early Neurological Stimulation — gentle, age appropriate handling that supports the development of a confident, resilient nervous system.
What the First Weeks Look Like
Our puppies spend their first two to three weeks in our bedroom — the heart of our home. They hear the sounds of daily life from the very beginning. The dishwasher. The washing machine. The television. Dogs barking. People talking.
This is not accidental. Every sound and experience is part of building a puppy that transitions smoothly into family life.
As they grow we introduce new experiences gradually and thoughtfully:
Gentle handling by different people
New textures and surfaces
Age appropriate sensory exposure
Outdoor time on our covered porch
Interaction with other animals
By the time a Luckie Puppy goes home they have already experienced more of the world than most puppies twice their age.
Keeping Families Informed
Once puppies arrive our waitlist families hear from us regularly. We share updates, photos and milestones throughout the process so families feel connected to their puppy long before go-home day.
We believe the relationship between breeder and family does not begin at pickup — it begins the moment a reservation is confirmed.
What This Means for You
If you have ever wondered why our Shih Tzu puppies are priced the way they are — this is why. Every litter represents weeks of preparation, sleepless nights, daily monitoring, intentional early development and unwavering commitment to producing the healthiest, best socialized puppies we possibly can.
You are not just buying a puppy. You are bringing home a Luckie Puppy — and that means something.
Ginger is due soon. We are expecting beautiful red, lavender and dobie Shih Tzu puppies from this litter. Two priority reservation spots are still available.
If you have been thinking about applying, now is the time.
